Ujjayi

Narrow the throat so the breath whispers like distant sea. Even in, even out.

15 breathsVataKapha

How to do it

Breathe through the nose while gently narrowing the back of the throat, so the breath makes a soft sound like distant surf. Keep the in-breath and out-breath the same length and the sound the same volume throughout. If it sounds strained or rasping, you are working too hard.

SeatedSeated — exactly the same.

What it does

A steady, audible breath gives a wandering mind something to hold on to.

When you'll be given it

Throughout Vata sequences, and as the breath during Kapha flows.

Where it comes from

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.51–53.

Take care

Ease off if the throat feels scratched. Not while you have a sore throat.
